Biography

Thomas was born in 1772. He is the son of Thomas Carwardine and Ann Holgate.

Thomas was indentured as a Lawyers Clerk to William Walton, King's Bench at Westminster and Solicitor of the High Court of Chancery, the agreement drawn up by Carew Southby Reynell of Newmarket Cambs on July 1st 1793.

Event Date: 20 May 1802

Ann Carwardine was unfortunately incarcerated in a mental asylum.[2] It seems he was in a long term non-marital relationship with Sarah Miller (1785-1863) with whom he had several children from 1807 to 1819. The last two children were born at Stepney. Though records of their birth have not been found, both had Carwardine recorded on their death certificates. The baptism, or marriage record of the other children make it clear that Thomas Carwardine was the father.

Further evidence is found in his will in which he makes financial arrangements for 'Sarah Miller, who resides with me as housekeeper for and during the term of her natural life for the maintenance of her and her children, Thomas, Sarah, Elizabeth, Rhoda, Ann, Henry, and William'. The will was dated 1819 before the youngest child, John, was born and on Thomas' death, attached to the will is an affidavit confirming John as a son but there appeared to be some dispute as whether he would be included in the provision made for the other children. The affidavit also notes that these named were his natural children.
The will makes nieer provision for, not any reference to his wife Ann, who must therefor have passed away before the will was drawn up.[3]

He was residing at Castle Hedingham, Essex, between 1807 and 1816 before moving to Stepney by 1817, according to the baptismal records of his children.
Thomas's will states that he had land holdings at the Parish of Colne Engaine some 1 1/2 miles to the south of his fathers living, whilst he was probably practicing law at Castle Hedingham, 9 miles to the north.
