Property was passed on to son Robert Wormley Carter by deed 3 Sept 1771.[5]
Death
According to both the DAR and the SAR, based on member-submitted data, Landon died on 10 August 1778 at Sabine Hall, Virginia.[6][7] He wrote his will 4 September 1770, probated 1 February 1779, he had a 13 page will.[8] He makes his sons executors of his will: Robert, Landon and John, and pretty much split his estate among them. He also mentions daughters: Berkeley, Maria, Judith and Lucy.
Children
Children of Landon and Elizabeth (may be incomplete list):
Landon Carter owned many enslaved people still remaining to be researched. The following two were found in the Bruton-Middleton Parish Register.
Baptism of enslaved Judah and Elizabeth belonging to Col. Landon Carter 5 April 1747.[9] (Landon's name is entered incorrectly as "Landing)."
Research Notes
overviews such as those offered in this biography put his death at 22 Dec 1778. It is very possible that the August date is accurate, and that the later date is the date of probate.
When, where and how did Landon Carter assume the rank of Colonel? Was it a reflection of his wealth and his father's prominence in the area? Did he serve anywhere, anytime?
According to the Sons of the American Revolution application[6] being linked here, and to a lesser extent in the DAR record[7], he was a member of (clerk) of the Committee appointed by the Virginia Assembly in 1765 to draft the Petitions to the King and Parliament for the Repeal of the Stamp Act, and he aided in enrolling the militia to defend the colony.
