Joseph Leonce "Buck" Carriere, son of Laurence Carriere and Simeonice Chautin, was born on 22 November 1894 in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States. He was baptized on 8 December 1894 at St. Francis Regis Catholic Church in Arnaudville.[1]
He was enumerated with his parents and siblings during the 1900 census, living in or around Arnaudville.[2]
Leonce was a professional gambler.[6]
He appears to have owned a poolroom and restaurant in 1917 in Port Barre. He was described in his draft registration report as being of medium height and build, with blue eyes and dark brown hair.[7]
Leonce and Edith were enumerated with their daughter during the 1920 census, living at South Walnut Street in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. His mother and a young nephew, Orford Hargroder, were living with them. No occupation was listed for Leonce.[5]
In 1921, Leonce and Edith lived at 837 6th Street in Port Arthur, Jefferson County, Texas.[8]
They were divorced on 31 October 1921 in Beaumont, Texas.[9]
He was heard in the Court of Criminal Appeals on 25 March 1925 in Austin, Travis County, Texas. According to a brief news article listing appeals cases, his case was "submitted on brief for both."[10]
The following month his case was "reversed and remanded."[11]
He was scheduled for trial to be held on 28 September 1925, in the Fifty-eighth district court in Beaumont, on felony charges for transporting liquor.[12]
The trial was rescheduled for 12 October 1925. His lawyer tried to get the case dismissed on the grounds that the arresting officers did not obtain a search warrant. At the time of the arrest two years earlier, a search warrant was apparently not required by law. The judge overruled the motion.[13]
In 1927, Leonce Carriere lived at 148 17th Street in Port Arthur. He was employed by The Texas Company.[14]
In 1929, Leonce lived at 215 East 8th Street in Port Arthur, still working for The Texas Company.[15]
Leonce died on 15 April 1929 in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana.[16]
