Joseph was born in 1825 in Canada. Joseph married Hortense Clément dite Lariviere on 27 Jul 1846 in Marabel, Quebec. In this marriage record, it states that his father is André Carriere and his mother is Emilie Dubois. Joseph and Hortense had at least 2 sons: Arthur and Moise

On Jan 27, 1862 Joseph married Sophie Darragon dite Lafrance this marriage record states he is the widower of Hortense Clement but the record for Hortense's death has not yet been found.

In 1870 he was married to Locadie Dupanier. Joseph and Locadie’s married in the cathedral and the record is in Ottawa in the church registers of Ottawa (they are in French). This record states that he is the widower of Sophie Lafrance. Joseph’s full name is Jos. Antime Gemme dit Carriere.

At the time of their marriage Leocadia was 21 and he was 46 years of age per 1871 Canadian Census.

Joseph became a naturalized in Pennsylvania in 1874.
