Biography

Edward was born in 1901.

In 1905, the Minnesota state census shows 3 year old Edward in the Carrier home in Maple Lake township.[1]

The 1910 US census finds the Carrier family with 8 year old Ed, in Warroad Minnesota, his father Joe worked for the railroad.[2]

The 1920 US census record for the Carrier family (with many spelling and transcription errors) shows 18 year old Edward in a full house, living near the tiny town of Randall, Minnesota. Ed was done with school, and had a job doing farm labor.[3]

At some point between 1920 and 1937 Ed moved from Minnesota to Chicago, Illinois.

The story of the name change from Carrier to Currier went like this: When Ed started working for the Chicago Fire Dept, his first paycheck had a typo on it. His last name was incorrectly spelled Currier, with a "u". He cashed the check, but never had the mistake corrected with the fire department, from then on the family took the name Currier.

Another Chicago Fire Dept story told over a few beers was that the fire department had an under the table "arrangement" with a local glass company. When things were slow, an alarm would get pulled at one of the factories or warehouses, and the firemen would rush to the scene and start breaking out windows, before getting called off as a false alarm. The glass company would then be called to go in and replace all the broken windows.

In 1937, Ed married his 1st wife Dorothy Irwin.[4] (There are some conflicting records regarding her surname and the wedding date. The Paul Alan Fine book says she was Dorothy May Keenan, married 1 Feb 1937)

Son Brian was born in 1939.

The 1940 US census shows us the young Currier family was living in Chicago with Ed's wife's aunt Bessie.[5] Ed was 38 years old, wife Dorothy 27, and son Brian was 6 months old. Ed was working as a fireman for the city of Chicago and had informally gone through the name change as described above.

In 1942, Ed registered for the draft.[6] 41 year old Ed shows Dorothy is still next of kin, and he gives his physical description as: 5 ft 9 1/2, 175 lbs, with blue eyes and gray hair, light complexion and a scar on his nose.

Ed's 1st wife Dorothy disappears from the record at this time. Will add to the story when anything is found.

In 1946 Ed married his 2nd wife, Helen Elizabeth Rold (known as Betty to the family). Her parents were Frederick Rold and Amelia Wetzel.

Ed and Betty had 3 children, Edward jr (Eddy) born 1949, Linda 1953, Kathleen 1957.

He passed away in 1974.[7][8]
