Biography

William Monroe Campbell was born the 20th of March 1833 in Gadsden County, Territory of Florida.[1]

Lieutenant William Campbell served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: January 11, 1862
Mustered out: May 10, 1865
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): Company "C" 6th Regiment Florida Infantry,Company"B" 5th Batallion Florida Cavalry

William worked as a wagoner in 1860.[2]

At the formation of Company 'C' of the 6th Florida Regiment, on January 11, 1862, he was mustered in as a Corporal. He rose in the ranks, becoming 2nd Lieutenant on January 24, 1863 by Brevet.[3]

He remained in the until August 4, 1863 when used his prerogative as an officer and resigned. A week later, on August 10, 1863 he mustered into Company 'B' 5th Battalion of Florida Cavalry. He saw action at the Battle of Richmond, and was wounded on October 14, 1863 at the Battle of Bristoe Station, Virginia.

In the dissolution of the Confederate forces after Lee's surrender at Appomattox; the roads were filled with veterans heading home. Like many others, William saw no need to wait for orders or follow military protocol. He took his horse and left the battalion. The last muster roll lists him as Absent Without Leave, on April 25, 1865.

He returned home to Gadsden County, and went on to Tallahassee, Florida to swear the Oath of Allegiance on May 10, 1865.

William married Anna S. McDaniel in 1869 and moved a few miles north into Decatur County, Georgia.[4]


William and Anna lived in Faceville, Georgia. They had an infant son, not named, born in March, 1870. [5]

Their son did not survive childhood. William and Anna are the only members of their household in 1880. He and Anna lived their entire lives in Decatur County, Georgia. [6] He died in 1915 and is buried in the Campbell Cemetary.[7]
