According to the biography published by his grandson, George W. Callin, in his 1911 book, The Callin Family History[1]:
"Born about 1780, died 1835.
"Married about 1801 to Elizabeth Simon.
"John Callin, 2nd son of James 1st, emigrated with his family from Westmoreland Co., Penn., to Ashland County in 1816 and settled on 60 acres of his brother James' farm who gave him a life lease of it. He lived the remainder of his life on the same farm, dying in 1835 of tuberculosis and buried in Oliversburg Cemetery; his wife, Elizabeth, born Nov. 1780, died Nov., 1864, and buried near Auburn, Ind.; John, eldest son, died at 22, unmarried."
John Callin (spelled "Calan") and his household did appear on the 1820 Census in Milton Township, Richland County.[2] They appeared there in 1830, as well (spelled "Callon").[3]
John's exact death date is not know, but his will was sent to probate on 18 May 1835.[4]
Errata
Ashland County was not established until 1846, when it was formed from parts of several other counties, including Richland County, where the Callin family farm was located in Milton Township.
"Oliversburg" is a misspelling of "Olivesburg" - located in Weller Township, the town was originally laid out as "Olivesburgh," but all towns with a -burgh ending were officially changed to -burg by Ohio state law in 1890.
Old Olivesburg Cemetery is also known as Mount Olivet Cemetery - researchers have been unable to located John Callin's marker there.[5]
