On 24 July 1860, Samuel lived with his father and siblings George, Mary, and Evaline in District 2 of Owen County. He was working as a laborer.[2]
On 13 December 1887, Samuel was married to Cora Nance in Harrison County, Kentucky. Witnesses to the event were Samuel Moore, D. F. Burgess, and Thomas Caldwell.[3]
On 15 June 1900, Samuel and his wife Vera, their daughter Cora, and Samuel's sister Mary F. Caldwell lived in Kinman, Harrison County, Kentucky. Samuel worked as a farmer, renting his land.[4]
