Smith was born about 1822. He married Emily Nelson. He passed away about 1892.
He may have been the son of William and Margaret Cain as he lived in Russell County Kentucky at the same time they did, but there is currently no record to prove this definitively.
Ephraim, Smith, and William are the only heads of household Cains in Russell County, Kentucky in the 1850 census. Additionally Ephraim Cain got a land grant for 50 acres along Crab Creek in Russell County, Kentucky on February 5th, 1834. On August 19th 1841 William R Cain got a land grant for 79 acres along Wolf Creek in Russell County. On January 30th 1846 Ephraim Cain got a land grant for 38 acres along Cub Creek. On April 1st 1847 Smith W Cain got a land grant for 109 acres along Cub Creek. On March 28th, 1851 Smith W Cain got a land grant for 56 acres along Wolf creek. I infer that these men all owned land next to each other, and that in conjunction with them being the only Cains in Russell County Kentucky at this time makes a pretty good case for them being relatives.
