Biography

Carson was born to be a son of a farmer in Casey County, kentucky on 6 Nov 1915. Enlistment into the US Army at Camp Atterbury Columbus, Indiana on 7 Dec 941 and deployed to E Battery 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (AntiAircraft) on Bataan, Philippines. PVT Cain was wounded during this time and received the Purple Heart. Carson was captured by JAPAN on April 9, 1942, when Major General Edward P. King Jr. surrendered Bataan after being under total sieged from January 7 until April 9, 1942. PVT Cain was transported aboard the TOTTORI MARU a “Hell Ship” on 8 October 1942 when the ship departed Manila for Takao, Formosa. On 9 October 1942: Off Luzon, at about 0700, LtCdr (later Rear Admiral) James C. Dempsey's’ (USNA ‘31) USS SPEARFISH (SS-190) fires three torpedoes at the TOTTORI MARU at 15-26N, 117-05W, but lookouts see the torpedoes and the ship turns in their direction causing them to miss and pass by her stern. On 9 November 1942: 14 officer and 1,288 enlisted POWs (including PVT Cain) are issued winter clothes and sent by train to Mukden, Manchukuo (Manchuria) and was imprisoned at Hoten POW Camp (Mukden) Manchuria (42-123). On 16 August 1945, a six man Office of Strategic Services (OSS) team parachuted into Mukden and the camp was liberated. The first Red Army troops arrived in Mukden on 19 August by air. Carson departed Mukden 2 Sep 1945 attached to movement TFR2-34 for rest and medical recovery.

Carson married Edna Marie Yelden from Iowa on 10 Feb 1948 in Prince George, Virginia.

Records and dates have not been located, SGT Cain was deployed in the 1950's to South Korea to fight during the Korean War. Carson was wounded during the war, received the Purple Heart, and returned to service upon recovering from 2 rounds in his right side.

SFC Carson Cain retired for the US Army at Fort Eustis, VA in 1972.

He passed away on 25 Dec 1996 in Newort News, VA with five sons and one daughter. [1]
