James and his brother David enlisted with the 74th Regiment, Illinois Infantry, Company B in August 1862. He was injured on May 17, 1864 at the Battle of Adairsville during the Atlanta Campaign. In October that year he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, 34th Regiment. He mustered out April 7, 1865. [3][4][5][6]
In 1880 he is listed as a widower living in Sinn Sun River, Montana. [7][8]
James passed away in 1901 at the Montana Veterans Home in Montana. [9][10]
↑ Military records and FindAGrave say he was born in Vermont. However parents were living in Canada during this time, there are no records from Vermont and 1860 census says he was born in Canada.
