Alice was born on 22nd December 1812 at Broughton, Lincolnshire, England, the daughter of Joseph Burtt and Mary Burtt.[1] Alice's family were Quakers; her birth was recorded at the Quarterly Meeting of Lincolnshire. It reported that she was born at the parish of Welbourn, and her father was a Grazier.[2]
Alice married Samuel Williams Wright, a farmer, at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in 1839.[3] They were married at the Friends Meeting House at Broughton, Lincolnshire.
At the time of the 1841 census Samuel and Alice's oldest child, [[Wright-23795|William] was a baby. The family lived at Witchford, Cambridgeshire, and a young lady Charlotte Joy lived with them - presumably a servant.[4]
In 1851, Alice and Samuel had five more children and two house servants living with them. They lived 'opposite the church' in Witchford, Ely, Cambridgeshire. Samuel was a 'farmer of 250 acres employing 10 men and four boys'. Eldest son William was absent, perhaps away at school.[5][6]
Samuel was unable to pay off debts and by the time of the 1861 census the family had left the farm and moved to 11 North Road, St Cuthbert's, Darlington. Four of their sons lived at home, ages 16-1, and one domestic servant. Samuel was working as an 'accountant to coal owner'.[7][8] It is thought that he was introduced to fellow member of the Society of Friends Joseph Pease, railway pioneer who gave him a job. Presumably the family circumstances were much reduced. Alice and Samuel were still living at North Road, Darlington in 1871 with two sons, Charles (25) and Thomas (18), and one servant. Samuel was listed as a clerk in the coal trade.[9][10]
Alice died in Darlington towards the end of 1880.[11] She was 68 years old.
