Biography

This profile is part of the Burkhart Name Study.

Mary Ann "May" Burkett was born in 1843 on her parents' farm in Ashe County, North Carolina, USA. She was the daughter of Daniel Burkett, 1818–1919, and his wife, Nancy Catherine Johnston, 1825–1876. Two of her siblings were Barbara and Loretta. On the 1860 US Census, she was recorded as "Mary Burket," age 17, single, living with her parents, now 41 & 34 years old, respectively, on their farm in Ashe County, North Carolina, USA. Their household included Mary Ann and 5 younger siblings. [1]

On 6 August 1866 Mary Ann "May" Burkett married widower, Hugh C. Turner (abt.1832-1876), in Ashe County, North Carolina, USA, as his 2nd wife. He had a small son, born in 1861, to raise. [2] The couple had 3 sons together: Daniel Winston Turner, 1869–1955; William Walter Turner (1873-1946); and John Andrew Turner, 1875–1955. [3]

Hugh C. Turner passed away in September 1876 on his farm in Ashe County, North Carolina, USA. No Find A Grave Memorial has been found for him. Mary Ann (Burkett) Turner survived her husband's passing at just 44 years old.

On 3 July 1879 in Jefferson, Ashe, North Carolina, she remarried to Aswell Peter Eller, 1834–1906. The couple lived in Chestnut Hill Twp., Ashe County, North Carolina, and had 1 son & 2 daughters together between 1881-1885. They were recorded living there on the 1880 US Census. [4]

As Mrs. Mary A. Eller, she passed away at 82 years old on 12 April 1925 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. Her 2nd husband had predeceased her in 1905 and she had gone to the North-West to live with her married daughter: Rosa (Eller) Vardeman. Mary Ann (Burkett) Eller's obituary was reported in Portland, Oregon, where she was living. [5] As Mary Ann (Burkett) Eller, she was buried at Lincoln Memorial Park, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA. [6]
