Obituary

The following is from the South Carolina Historical and Genealogical Magazine

Died, on Wednesday, the 27th ult. in his 48th year of his age, after a long illness, Mr John Burckmyer, a native of this place.... He has left a wife and five children to bemoan the loss of an affectionate husband and tender parent. His remains were interred in the burial ground of the German Lutheran Church. The German Fusileers of this city, under Capt. Strobel, of which he has been a member, attended and performed military honors on the occasion. (Thursday June 4,1812.) (Funeral at 76 Wentsworth St.)

Will of John Burckmyer

(Recorded in Will Book E 1807-1818 page 274) State of South Carolina, City of Charleston.

In the name of God Amen, I ,John Burckmyer of the City and STate aforesaid by which Deed I do make this my last Will and Testament revoking all former Wills and Testaments and now being of sound Mind And Memory, and considering the Uncertainty of Life and the Certainty of Death, I do hereby request, that my funeral Charges, may be first Settled, and all my just Debts be Paid, and do give and bequeath my Worldly Prosperity in the following Manner.

  • Imprimus I give and bequeath unto my loving and lawful Wife, Ann Mary Burckmyer, all rents, and Incomes, to her sole use and behoof thereof, my riding Chair, also all Singular my furniture whatsoever and wheresoever, to her sole use, and behoof thereof during her natural life.
  • Item, I give and bequeath unto my son John Charles Burckmyer, my Gold Watch for his sole use.
  • I give and bequeath unto my son Cornelius Diener Burckmyer my Potrait Picture for his sole use.
  • Item, I give and bequeath unto my two sons jointly, John Charles and Cornelius Diener Burckmyer, a Certain Lot of Land containing (blank) acres situated between Wraggsborough and Hampstead measuring fifty feet, from the House Westward to the extent of said Lot of Land, also a certain Negro Boy, named Tom about 14 Years of Age, for their sole use and behoof thereof, to be equally divided to them.
  • Item, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter, Mary Elizabeth Ellsworth, now the Wife of Fredrick Ellswoth a House and Lot of Land in Society Street, known by number (blank) measuring forty two and a half in front, by one hundred and eleven feet in depth to her sole use, but should she die without Issue, then at her death, the said Property, shall be re-instated back, to be sold and equally divided among my Surviving Children.
  • Item, I give and bequeath unto My Daughter Elizabeth Burckmyer, a house and Lot in Wenthworth Street, known by the Number Seventy Six (76) measuring one hundred and twenty one feet in depth, by Sixty feet five inches (60.5) in frony, to her sole use, but should she die without Issue, then said Property, in Case of her death, to be reinstated back, and to be sold, and the amount to be equally divided among my surviving Children.
  • Item, I give and bequeath unto My Daughter Julia Cobia Burckmyer, a Lot of Land in Wentworth Street measuring in front Sixty Seven and a half feet, and in depth One hundred and twenty one feet, and also a Tract of Land , situated between Wraggsborough and Hampstead. Fronting on Mary Street two hundred and thirty feet, for her sole use, during her lifetime, and in Case she should Marry and have no Issue, then the said Property to be reinstated back, and the proceeds from the same to be divided amongst my Surviving Children.
  • Item, I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth Cobia, the Sister of my wife Ann Mary Burckmyer, Negro Girl Named Patience, with her issue and increase if any (about (17) years of age) for her Sole use forever.
  • I now give and bequeath unto my loving and lawful Wife Ann Mary Burckmyer, in Manner & form following (that is to say) the whole of my Furniture, Negroes, Plate, Bed & Bedding, Chairs, Carts, Horses and every Part or Particle of my Household and Kitchen furniture.
