Biography

1st Sergeant Tolbert Bromley served with the United States Army during the Spanish-American War.

Tolbert was born in 1879. He was the son of William Bromley and Josephine Kinney. [1]

It is presumed that he was named for his great uncle, the Rev. Tolbert Fanning.

He enlisted in the US Army in 1898 and served in the 1st Texas Volunteer Cavalry during the Spanish American War, and the 33rd Infantry during the Philippine-American war. [2] He served in the Army until sometime between 1920-1930. His service included:

  • 1st Texas Volunteer Cavalry
  • Private, 33rd Volunteer Infantry at Baguio, Philippines in 1900-01 [3]
  • 5th Infantry at Camp Downes, Leyte, Philippines
  • 5th Infantry at Brooklyn, New York on 27 Mar 1905 [4]
  • 9th Infantry at Fort Slocum, New York on 02 Apr 1908 [5]
  • 20th Infantry, Fort San Pedro, Philippines on 12 Apr 1911 [6]
  • 20th Infantry, Manila, Philippines on 17 Apr 1914 [7]
  • 8th Infantry in 1916
  • Fort Slocum, New York on 06 Apr 1917
  • Watertown Arsenal, Massachusetts in 1918
  • Reenlisted 10 Oct 1919
  • 19th Infantry at El Paso, Texas in 1920 [8] [9]
  • Retired on 06 Jun 1926 from 10th Reconnaissance Company, 12th Observation Squadron at Nogales, Arizona [10]

Tolbert resided in El Paso, Texas in 1930 [11] passed away in 1931 at the age of 51; [12] and is buried at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas. [13]

He does not appear to have ever married, and it is not known if he ever had children.
