"Not Afraid of the Weather - Mrs Charles Matthews drove to spend Christmas and partake of the Christmas dinner with her son Mr T. Artemis Matthews at Elmsdale. The feature of this which makes it worthy of note is the fact that the lady is past her 84th year and is still as chipper and smart as many a younger lady." [2]
Research Note
Source cited says that Jane "with her parents, had moved from Chatham, N.B. to Elmsdale, PEI when she was about 16 years old." Jane, however, gave PEI as her place of birth on census records.
Goin' to the Corner says her parents were John Alexander Brander (b. 1798) and Nancy Ann Matthews (b. 1801), Islanders whose children were born in Chatham. They moved back to the Island in 1857. The family was not in the 1851 Census of New Brunswick, although Chatham parish was covered by this census. John Brander, a man over 60, was in the PEI 1861 Census, he was 4 years into a 99 year lease.
Onn the 1891 census, Thomas Artemas Matthews said both of his parents were born on the Island.
