Research Note

January 2017: PLEASE BE ADVISED, Please DO NOT attach Rebecca Cripps, Rebecca Izzard or Faith Allen as wives to Rev Robert Bracewell without evidence. Proven wives of Rev Robert Bracewell in paperwork found to date or referenced on the internet must be vetted as proved, versus assumed. Robert Bracewell is a direct ancestor of Lyndon Johnson.

  • Robert Bracewell (or Braswell), son of Richard Bracewell of Feild [Field] Lane, Holborn , was baptized 13 Oct 1611 at St. Andrew Holborn, London, England. [1] [2] [3][4]
Anno Dm 1611 October [Margin number 145] Robt the Sonne of Richard Bracewell bapt: the same daie [xiii th of Octob'r] feild lane [right margin 2103]
  • He entered Hart Hall, Oxford University, at age 15, 22 Feb 1627/8;[5] received his BA 3 Nov 1631.[6][4]
  • Likely a loyalist to King Charles I (who was executed by Puritans in 1649), Rev Bracewell no doubt joined the company of Cavaliers and emigrated to Virginia. His first surviving record, dated 29 Apr 1650, was the Bennett-Webb agreement to which he testified.[7]
  • In 1653, he was chosen a Burgess from Isle of Wight County, but was suspended due to his being a clergyman, and therefore "unpresidentiall and may produce bad consequence."[8][9][10][4]

Notes

  • He purchased 300 acres from Capt John Upton. Captain Upton's will in 1652 state that 300 acres of land out a tract of 1500 was to be reserved for Mr Robert Braswell.[11][12][13][14]
  • His plantation was located on the Blackwater River, some miles south of the James River and the colonial town of Jamestown, a few miles northwest of where the town of Smithfield, Virginia now stands. His pastorate, known as Lawn's Creek Parish was changed to the Southwark Parish in 1737.[citation needed][15] It is reported that Boddie in Southside Virginia Families, page 85. said he was rector of St. Luke's Church, Isle of Wight County, Virginia. However Boddie does not mention this.[4]
  • His will, dated 15 or 16 Feb 1667/8; proved 1 May 1668, named daughters Jane Stokes (and her children), dau Rebecca West, sons Robert, Richard; servant Elizabeth Hall; dau Ann Bagnall.[16] [17]
  • He died before 01 MAY 1668 in Isle of Wight, Isle of Wight, Virginia, when his will was proved.[18] :Second possible death place: Blackwater, Franklin, Virginia.[citation needed]

Bracewell-673 and Bracewell-3 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate. Several generations of this Bracewell line duplicated and abandoned. I have adopted them to facilitate merges.
Reverend Robert's wife is often referred to as "REBECCA IZARD". The records prove that this is not true. Her name is not on any record. We simply do not know who she is.

1. Rebecca (maiden name unknown) was the 1st wife of Roger Bagnall. Roger's will is dated 1647, and he presumably died that same year.

2. Rebecca later married Richard Izard, who was appointed guardian of REV Robert Bracewell's minor heirs, Richard and Robert, who were appointed executors of their father's will. Bracewell's will is dated 15 Feb 1667 and was probated May 1, 1668. By the 9th of June 1669, Richard Izzard had died and his will was probated by his wife Rebecca, who apparently finished the work of her husband, regarding the will of Robert Bracewell.

3. James Bagnall, son of Roger Bagnall and Rebecca his wife, was the husband of Ann Bracewell, daughter of REV Robert Bracewell. (See Bracewell's will dated 1667 on this site)

1647 - ROGER BAGNALL, Will, 19 Oct. 1647, To wife Rebecca Bagnall 2 cows and 2 heifers, wife to give each child a yearling heifer to run for their use which shall be in year 1649; to wife all goods and house hold stuff, crops, corn, tobacco, hogs land and plantation until my son James Bagnall shall be a lawful heir; to James Bagnall when of age the plantation I live on. Teste, Joseph Weeks, Charles Stewart. (IOW Will Abstracts Book A)

1669 - Will of Richard IZARD dated 22 May 1669, "beinge Sicke in Body." To two daughters Mary IZARD & Martha ISARD Two third parts of all my proper estate either in land or chattles or my other goods whatsoever belongeth unto mee. To wife Rebecca IZARD the other third part of my estate and if in case that either of my daughters Mary & Martha shall dye before they come of age that then my will is that the survivor of the aforsd Mary & Martha shall have the aforesd two thirds parte of estate wholly & solitee only it is my will that if any one of my daughters by surviving obtayne the two thirds of my estate as aforesd That then the daughter so surviving shall pay out of the aforesd two thirds unto James BAGNALL the sonne of James BAGNALL two thousand pounds of Tobacco alsoe that two daughters Mary & Martha remaine with their Mother and also the divident of my estate bequeathed as aforesd and she to have the charge of it, untill they come to age. Wife Rebecca IZARD executrix, and Sonne in law James BAGNALL be overseer of will. Witnesses John BURWELL, Richard (his mark) ANGLEE Proved & Recorded 9 June 1669. Bk. 2, p. 69.

1670 - Mrs. Rebecka IZARD, Patent 250 acres, Isle of Wight Co. 14 Sept. 1670.

1675 - Will of Rebecah IZARD dated 20 Oct. 1675 "being sick in body." "After daughter Rebeccah BAGNALL's estate be taken out of the whole estate of mine and daughter Martha IZARD & the debts paid then the estate to be equally divided betwixt me & my aforesd Daughter Martha IZARD then out of my proportion I give as followeth: To Rebeccah BAGNALL & Mary BENNETT & Martha IZARD & James BAGNALL the sonne of James BAGNALL, Nehemiah HUNT, the sonne of Godfrey HUNT & Elizabeth REEVES, the daughter of Henry REEVES all my proportion of estate before expressed to be equally divided betwixt them and my will is that my sonne James BAGNALL, Henry REEVES, & Ambrose ? be my overseers to see this my will performed. Wit. John BURWELL, Wm. WESTAN. Proved 20 Oct. 1675. Bk. 2, p.135

The Eunice Young article has a new link. She lists Faith Allen as his most probable spouse, but indicates that his spouse is unknown (perhaps something on the wife's profile suggests that instead she is named Rebecca?).

Somewhere, and I can't find it, Eunice also had reference of a Jane Bracewell who died before the will in the same location of the will which makes more sense due to daughter's name Jane.

Hi. At ancestrydotcom I have dna matches to 21 "cousins" descended or otherwise related to this couple of Rev. Robert Braswell born 1611 and his wife Rebecca Izard.

Is that just a coincidence? There are no other common connections in their trees but this Braswell family and I do not have a known familial connection to this family. My neighbor is descended from them and I was doing research for her and that is how I found out about the matching cousins. The wiki relationship finder finds no relation connection. So how come my dna would match to 20 people that are related to this family? Thank you. Emm

Rev Robert Bracewell's wife died before the will therefore she is not named in it. She was not Rebecca Izard. I have the details at my website:
