Biography

Hannah Boyle was born in County Armagh, Ireland (now Northern Ireland) in 1843. She was baptised on the 17th of December 1843 in Loughgilly, County Armagh, Ireland. She was baptised, Hanna and her parents were listed as Pat Boyle and Mary Ann Kennan. Her godparents were Fred Simpson and Cal Lamb ^[1].

Between 1845 and 1852 the Great Famine (Gorta Mor) ravaged Ireland. The population dropped by a quarter due to starvation, disease or emigration, and many more left Ireland subsequently, finding little left at home to keep them there ^[2]. At the age of 10, her family immigrated to Brisbane Australia aboard the Caroline. The family sailed from Liverpool on the 31st of July ^[3]. The docked in New South Wales on 14 Nov 1853. Finally, they arrived in Morton Bay on the 17th Nov 1853. The family came from Armagh their religion was recorded as the Roman Catholic.

She married Albert Throgmorton Ball on 29 Dec 1863 in Brisbane, Queensland ^[6]. Their children were:

Hannah was known for her charitable works with the Benevolent Society, and generally assisting those who were in distress ^[18].

Hannah and her husband both died on 14 June 1897, killed in a terrible accident at a railway crossing in Mackay, Queensland when their horse was spooked by the train whistle and bolted in front of the incoming train.^[18][19]

Hannah was buried in the Catholic Section of Mackay City Cemetery, with her husband Albert, infant daughter Shirley Erin Canon Throgmorton Ball, son Clarence, daughter-in-law Mary, and grand-daughter Mary Lee-Bryce.^[20]

Research Notes

• Hannah's husband recorded on her marriage certificate on the 29 December 1893 in Brisbane, was Charles Moore, a grazier in Liechard district in Queensland ^[21]. Was this a transcription error, was Albert going by a different name for a time or is this marriage date incorrect? Albert was a grazier.
• FindAGrave lists her birth date as 19 Dec 1946. This date does not align with her baptism date (17 Dec 1843), age at immigration (10 in 1853), or her age at death (53 in 1897) listed on her headstone and in her obituary. Thus, this birth date was dismissed.
