Biography

William Bowles was born in about 1746 (based on his age at death of 78).

The first notice so far found for William Bowles was the application for a marriage license to marry Mary Biddlecomb the daughter of William Biddledomb) at St Mary, Alverstoke in Hampshire, 17th Oct 1799[1]. Strange, because they appear to have married on the 16th of October 1799[2].

Hampshire Telegraph 21 October 1799, page 3:
Gosport
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19.
Tuefday was married here Mifs Biddlecomb, of this town, to Mr. Bowles, of Afhlands, near Southwick.[3]

Their only daughter, Mary, was born the following year on 7th of July and was baptised at St Nicholas, Boarhunt on the 25th of July[4].

Sadly his wife Mary died on the 28th of July 1800[5].

William married a second time, to Jane Varlo in September 1804:

Salisbury and Winchester Journal 01 October 1804, page 4:
Wednesday was married, John Bowles [sic], Esq. of Ashlands, near Southwick, to Miss Jane Varlo, daughter the late P. Varlo, Esq. of Portsmouth.[6]

They likely remained childless.

William passed away on the 9th of September 1824 aged 78[5]. He was buried on 17th September 1824 at Boarhunt, Hampshire[7].

After his death, the following notice was published on page 1 of the Sun (London) dated 20th of May 1825:
