Biography

George Benjamin Richings Bousfield was born on 17 July 1824 in Blackfriars, London. He was the son of William Bousfield and Rebecca Richings.

He was baptised at St. Bride, Fleet Street, London on 22 May 1829[1].

He was educated at the University of Oxford (St. Edmund Hall), matriculating on 21 March 1844, aged 17. George graduated B.A. in 1847 when he was 19 years of age. This information is recorded in the book, Alumni Oxeniensis.

In the 1851 England Census, George B R Bousfield was aged 26 and single, living on his own as a Curate at Carleton Road, Norfolk.

He married Georgiana Mary Floyer Gambier (the daughter of Robert Gambier and Caroline Gore Browne), who was four or five years his senior, on 6 February 1855[2]. Notice of their marriage was printed on page 3 of the Norfolk Chronicle dated 17 February 1855:

On the 6th inst., at the church in Gordon-square the Rev. George Benjamin Richings Bousfield, to Georgiana Mary Floyer Gambier, third daughter Rear-Admiral Gambier, of Albany-terrace, Regent's park, and of Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire.[3]

  6. Evelyn Bousfield (b. 1862, d. 1940)
  7. Charles George Bousfield (b. 1867, d. 1951)

By 1861, George Benjamin Bousfield was recorded living in Brighton, Sussex, England as a Clergyman (Methodist - without care of souls), aged 36, with his wife Georgina Mary Bousfield (40) and their four young children Kathleen Gambree Bousfield (5), Lilian Bousfield (4), Bertha Mary Bousfield (2) and Robert William Bousfield (1). There were also three servants in the household.

By 1871, the family of nine were living in Wentworth Place, Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England with two household staff.

George was a Methodist minister and wrote the book, “ Christianity and Apostleship: A Sermon, Etc.” in 1872 and was published in 1873.

George B R Bousfield (aged 56 and a Clergyman without care of Souls) was recorded living with his wife Georgiana M. H. Bousfield (61) and their children Kathleen G. Bousfield (25), Bertha M. Bousfield (22), Hilda Bousfield (19), Evelyn Bousfield (18) and Charles G. Bousfield (14) at 5, Abbey Road, St Marylebone, Marylebone, London & Middlesex in the 1881 England Census.

By 1891 he and his family were recorded at 248 Portsdown Road in Paddington, London.

He passed away on 15 January 1897, after a bicycle accident[4]. Notice of his death appeared in numerous papers, one of them being the St. James's Gazette (London) dated 18 January 1897:

FATAL CYCLING ACCIDENT.
A CLERGYMAN KILLED.
The Rev. George B. Ritchings Bousfield, B.A., residing at 248, Portsdown road, Maida-vale, was cycling along Edgware-road on Saturday when the bicycle skidded owing to the slippery condition of the wood paving, and the deceased fell, the wheels of a passing omnibus going over one of his legs. The reverend gentleman, who is between sixty and seventy years of age, was conveyed to the Nursing Institute, Maida-vale, where it became necessary to perform an amputation, owing to the shocking injury to the limb, but he succumbed to the operation.[5]
