Marie Madeleine Bouchard was born on 31 May 1665 and baptized on 2 Jun 1665 in La-Visitation-de-Notre-Dame de Château-Richer, Canada, Nouvelle France.
Her parents were Michel Bouchard and Marie Trotinne. Godparents at the infant's baptism were Pierre Gravelle and Madeleine Gasgnon. The officiating priest was Thomas Morel.[4][5]
Marriage Marie Madeleine Bouchard and Pierre Dancosse married about 1679. Neither a marriage contract nor act of marriage has been found for this marriage. Their first child Marie Madeleine was born in 1680. Pierre Dancosse was buried being given the age of around 50 years on the record on 13 Aug 1697 in Notre-Dame de Québec.[6]
Natural child with François De Serre and Marie Magdeleine Bouchard, widow of Pierre Dancosse, entered into a marriage contract with Notary Guillaume Roger on 22 Sep 1699.[8][9] This marriage contract was cancelled.[10] They had a natural child, Marie Anne Deserre, born 18 Jun 1700.
Second Marriage Marie Madeleine Bouchard, aged 36 on the record, widow of Pierre Dancosse, married Jean François Gauvin, aged 27 on the record, son of Jean Gauvin and Anne Magnan, on 29 May 1702 in Notre-Dame-de-Liesse de Rivière-Ouelle. In the presence of known witnesses Étienne Bouchard, Gabriel Bouchard, François Bouchard, Mathurin Dubé, and Étienne Janneau. The celebrant priest was J. Bernard de Requeleyne.[11][12] There were no children from this marriage.
Death and Burial Madeleine Bouchard passed away on 21 Nov 1755 being given the age of around 90 years on the record. Her burial was the following day in Notre-Dame-de-Liesse parish cemetery of Rivière-Ouelle. In the presence of known witnesses Pierre Plourde, René Dubé and Louis Dubé. The officiating priest was Chevalier.[13][14]
Notes
Research Note: PRDH lists Marie Anne last name as Serre. However, her baptismal act clearly states Deserre. PRDH also calls her birth "née hors marriage". However, her parents entered into a marriage contract and there may well have been a marriage act that was lost (as was the case of many marriages of this era). Marie Anne's father's first name is not mentioned in the baptismal act, so the marriage annulment seems likely to have occurred in 1699 as stated above. At least PRDH did not call Marie Anne an illegitimate child as given her birth date it seems her parents were married when she was conceived. While out of wedlock may be a factual statement because her parents were not married when she was born, PRDH seems a bit snarky for the situation. After all they do not call people born after a their father died "né(e) hors mariage". Additional note: There was no actual marriage, there was a marriage contract done on 22 September 1699 before notary Roger, the contract was canceled. Note that in French the words annuled and canceled both read annulé. It's not only Tanguay that says there was no actual marriage, so does Jetté.[15]
Also, while there is a marriage contract by Notary Guillaume Roger dated 22 Sept. 1699 for Francois de Serre and Marie Madeleine Bouchard, Tanguay noted that "le marriage n'a pa eu lieu"... the marriage never took place. This, of course, is according to Tanguay. He gave no reference, and numerous marriage records were lost over the years. Perhaps Tanguay should just have stated "acte de mariage non trouvé." Marie Anne's baptismal record simply states she is the "fille de ( ) de serre & de Marie Madeleinne Bouchard veuve de feu Pierre Dancosse...." Usually if a child is illegitimate, the record will say so (fille naturelle). Perhaps Father Bernard left it this way because Marie and Francois were engaged? It is interesting that only her father's surname is given and not his first name. What happened to Francois? He seems to disappear from the records. One has to wonder if he may have died or left the Province after the engagement and prior to the marriage, if so, why didn't Marie Anne's baptismal record state that? Hmmmm.... another genealogical mystery. Note: when a child is legitimate, the priests write daughter of so-and-so and such-and-such his wife. This is not the case here, the priest wrote Marie Anne fille de __ deserre et de Marie Madeleine Bouchard veuve de feu Pierre Dancosse.[16] The record right after this baptism uses the formula of stating his wife, so the priest simply did not pass judgement on paper; not all priests wrote the word illegitimate on their records. If an actual marriage had taken place and subsequently an annulment was done, there would be a large paper trail for it. Annulments by the church were few and far between. This couple never married.
