Biography

Bernard Blom was the son of Jan Blom (1792–1859) and Aaltje Slotboom (1793–1860), born on 1 Mar 1829 in Angerlo, Gelderland, Netherlands.[1]

Bernard married Anna Maria Heijting (1832–1916) on 30 May 1857 in Angerlo, Gelderland, Netherlands.[2][3]

Anna Maria Heijting and Bernard Blom had the following children:

  • Dirk H Blom (1858–1942)
  • John Benjamin Blom (1859–1948) - born "Jan Blom"
  • Bernard Blom (1861–1917)
  • Gerrit Blom (1862)
  • George Blom (1864–1916)
  • Antonie Blom (1864–1871)
  • Mary (Blom) Zimmerman (b.1865)
  • Anna Geertruida Blom (1866–1867)
  • Carolina "Carrie" (Blom) Harsch Voss (1868–1952)
  • Aleida Blom (1871)
  • William Arthur Blom (1874–1959)
  • Alexander Blom (1878–1962)

Birth records show that the couple had ten children in Angerlo between 1858 and 1872, when they emigrated to the United States with their six surviving children. Their two youngest sons were born after the family settled in Ackley, Hardin County, Iowa, where Bernard worked as a cabinet maker.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

The date of Bernard's death is not known, but he was recorded in the 1910 Census on 19 Apr 1910, and his wife was listed as "widowed" in the 1915 Iowa State Census.[10]

See my changes to reflect the Bernard Blom that married Anna Maria Heijting. I did not find a daughter Maartje, born 1862 in a different part of The Netherlands. Can you please check your sources?

Hello, B. W. J. Molier - I just found and adopted this profile today, after drafting a biography for Anna Maria Heijting.

I do see a record for a Maartje Blom, but I am skeptical that this is their daughter because of the birthplace (and because her parents aren't named): Name Maartje Blom Birth Date 16 apr. 1862 (16 Apr 1862) Birth Place Zuid Scharwoude

There is a Mary Blom in their household in Ackley, IA on the 1880 Federal Census, and that is probably the "Mrs. Mary Zimmerman, of St. Paul" mentioned in Anna Maria's obituary.

Name Mary Blom Age 15 Birth Date Abt 1865 Birthplace Holland Home in 1880 Ackley, Hardin, Iowa, USA Dwelling Number 129 Race White Gender Female Relation to Head of House Daughter Marital Status Single Father's Name Bernard Blom Father's Birthplace Holland Mother's Name Mariah Blom Mother's Birthplace Holland

There are records for a Mary and Fred Zimmerman in Saint Paul around that time, but Mary's maiden name is "Wild" - and I haven't been able to find records for a different Mary Zimmerman that I can tie to the Blom family.
