Joseph Blackwell was born on July 9, 1715 in St Stephen's Parish, Northumberland, Colony of Virginia, son of Samuel Blackwell (1680–<1730) and Margery Downing (1679–1739).[1]

Joseph (24) married Lucy Steptoe (19) (born about 1720 in Lancaster, Virginia, British Colonial America; daughter of John Steptoe and Elizabeth (Pinkard) Steptoe) in 1740 in Northumberland.[2] Their children were:

Research Notes

The following research notes seem to be for Joseph, Jr.:

There appears to be some discrepancy about Joseph's birth date. Specifically, Joseph is listed variously as having been born in 1750, 1752 and 1757. It should be noted that Samuel predeceased his father. In their father's will,[6] Joseph gets preferential treatment, receiving two-ninths of "what I have in trade with my son-in-aw Martin Pickett", the rest of that being equally divided among others. In addition, when naming the children in series, Joseph's name appears first. Joseph is also the only child mentioned in "Item 1", further suggesting that he was the eldest male. However, it has also been noted[6] that he, Joseph, Jr., in a Rev War Pension file deposition dated 24 Jul 1820, gave his age as "63 years in August next", an age being consistent with a 1757 birth. On the other hand, if he had said his age was 68 in August next, that would lead to a 1752 date of birth. Since "3" and "8" can so easily be cross-interpreted, this is very possible. Last on this subject, Letitia was born in October 1750, making it very unlikely that any other child of this couple was born the same year. Not impossible, just unlikely. I am satisfied with a 1752 birth in spite of the fact that the military records have him born in 1750.[7]
