Biography

Mathew Blackham was a convict after the Third Fleet.

An online pedigree gives his birth in 1796, despite his death record saying he was age 54 when he died in 1854. The birth location they give is Belper, Derbyshire, England. Since he was later convicted in Derby it seems probable that he was indeed born in Derbyshire. A birth or christening record would help to confirm this. [1]

Another pedigree gives his parents as Ambrose Blackham, b. 1752, Tipton, Staffordshire, England and Martha Cheetham, b. 1757, Duffield, Derbyshire, England [2] That Ambrose married Martha in Derbyshire is supportive of this. They married 26 Mar 1777 in Duffield, Duffield, Derbyshire, England[3] The surname variant in the marriage record was "Blackam".

It appears that he married his first wife Matilda Storer in Duffield, Duffield, Derbyshire, England, 17 Aug 1818[4] They had one child George Blackham born around Mar 1819 in Belper, Derbyshire, England[5]

Mathew arrived in Tasmania in 1823 aboard the ship "Competitor", having departed England 18 Mar 1823. He had been convicted in Derby, 16 July 1822. His conduct record records that he was absent from a muster 10 January 1827. [6]

Mathew married Alice Simpkins in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land on 17 October 1827[7]. They were both recorded as convicts[8]

The colonial family links database [9]gives their children as:

  • BLACKHAM AMBROSE 1828
  • BLACKHAM MARY ANNE 1830
  • BLACKHAM WILLIAM 1832
  • BLACKHAM JOHN 1834
  • BLACKHAM HARRIET 1837
  • BLACKHAM MARTHA 1839

The convict records website lists a third wife [10] to Mary Jordan 26/12//1853 (a convict).

Mathew died in Hobart on 10 June 1854[11]. His occupation on his death record is recorded as labourer. He died of paralysis, assumedly a stroke[12]

Contention

There seems to have been a Matthew (Mathew with two Ts) Blackham who settled early in Tasmania and married a Mary Cooley. This Mathew Blackham came out on the ship "Australasia" as a freeman. He was 43 when he married Mary in Hobart, 26 Dec 1853, giving him a supposed birth date of 1810[13], [14]
