Biography

Abigail Bishop was baptized at Bridport, Dorset, England on January 24, 1612/3, the daughter of Thomas and Avis (Abbott) Bishop. [1][2]

Abigail married first, Henry Coggan at Bridport on March 14, 1636/7. Henry was baptized at Taunton, Somersetshire, England on April 6, 1607, son of Henry and Joane (Boridge) Coggan. [1] [3]

Henry Coggan first came to Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay in 1634, but returned to England in 1636 and on this trip he married Abigail, before returning to Massachusetts. [3]

Abigail Coggan was admitted to the church at Dorchester, Massachusetts by 1638. The family then resided briefly at Scituate and then Barnstable by 1639. [3]

Her husband Henry died in England about June 16, 1649, on a return trip, without his family. [1] [3]

The inventory of his estate, dated October 3, 1649, was presented to the Plymouth Colony court by widow Abigail. It was valued at L28 14s 8d and included no real estate. Abigail was granted administration of the estate on October 29.[1] [3]

After Henry's death, Abigail married second, John Finney/Phinney on June 19, 1650 [1] [3] [4] as his second wife. John was baptized at Lenton, England on March 16, 1603/4, son of Robert Finney. They had no children. [5]

Abigail was buried at Barnstable on May 6, 1653. [1] [3] [5] [6]

After her death, on April 10, 1654, her father Thomas Bishop wrote a letter from Bridport, Dorset to John Finney, after the notification of daughter Abigail's death, in regards to the care of his Coggan grandchildren. Thomas indicated that Abigail Coggan should be sent to Bridport, that Thomas and Henry should be committed to Finney's care, and that John be bound to a trade or to seamanship at Salem or Boston. [1] [3]

In March, 1658/9, a complaint was filed against John Finney by Isaac Robbinson and Gyles Rickard Sr., just three days after the death of Thomas Coggan, son of Henry Coggan's deceased. The complaint was in behalf of Abigail and Henry's 2 remaining sons Henry and John who had 'suffered wrong in sundry respects' at the hand of John Finney. Finney was ordered to keep John Coggan in school and to prepare an accounting of the children's estate. [1] [3] [5]

John Coggan chose Captain James Cudworth and Isaac Robinson as his guardians and on June 7, 1659, Finney surrendered the Barnstable land's of Henry Coggan's to the guardians. [1] [3] [5]

Ann Bishop, Abigail's sister, married as her 2nd husband, John Holman.[7]
