Biography

Birth: Anthony Birkett was baptised on 26th September 1796 in Irton, Cumberland, the son of John Birkett and an unnamed mother ^[1]. (Note: FindMyPast has mistranscribed the surname as Birkell [6]. The 1841 census has no Birkells but 32 Birketts.)

Parents & siblings: Other baptisms from Irton naming John Birkett as the father are as follows (given names of parents in brackets):

• Ruth, bapt 14 Jul 1794 (John Birkett)
• Jane, bapt 17 Mar 1799 (John Birkett & Jane)
• Betty, bapt 10 May 1801 (John Birkett & Jane)
• John, bapt 12 Jun 1803 (John Birkett & Jane)

It appears that all five are at least half sibs, and are likely to be full sibs if the parish only recorded mothers' names from after 1796. John Birket married Jane Birket in 1793 in Muncaster (about 5 miles away) [7]. These are therefore likely to have been Anthony's parents.

Marriage: He married Elizabeth Burnett on 15th November 1824 in St Mary's church, Gosforth, Cumberland; one of the record specifies his parish as Irton (matching his baptism record), and notes "with consent of parents" (indicating at least one party was under 21; Elizabeth was 20) ^{[2] [3]}.

The record for the baptism of his son Joseph in 1835 spells his name as "Antony Berket" ^[4].

1841 census: Living at Andrew Ground, Gosforth, Whitehaven, Cumberland ^[5].

Death: His death was registered, as "Anthony Birkett", in the district of Whitehaven in the 3rd quarter of 1849 ^[6]. An undated record gives Workington, Cumberland as the place where an Anthony Birkett died ^[7], but the lack of any date means it might have been a different man.
