John Birket was born in Cumberland, England.

Biography

John Birket was christened on 21st October 1758 in Muncaster, Cumberland, son of Jonathan Birket and an unnamed mother ^[1].

Marriage & children: He married Jane Birket on 18th November 1793 in Muncaster, Cumberland ^[2] They were first cousins, having the same paternal grandfather (John Birket) and possibly also the same paternal grandmother. Five children were christened in Muncaster subsequently, as follows (christening date and parents' names in parentheses):

• Ruth (14 Jul 1794, John Birkett) ^[3]
• Anthony (26 Sep 1796, John Birkett) ^[4]
• Jane (17 Mar 1799, John Birkett & Jane) ^[5]
• Betty (10 May 1801, John Birkett & Jane) ^[6]
• John (12 Jun 1803, John Birkett & Jane) ^[7]

It appears that all five are at least half sibs, and are likely to be full sibs if the parish only recorded mothers' names from after 1796.

Research Notes

Father's marriage - Jonathan Birkett to Ann Lowther/Powther/Sowthe, 2 Oct 1753 or 1755, Muncaster [1]. BUT, it looks like either Jonathan was born outside Muncaster or his surname was Birkhead [2]. The Muncaster one is son of John Birkhead - I think that's the same grandfather that Jane has, so they are indeed first cousins.

Mother: The nearest baptism I can find to Ann's surnames is Ann Soother, 1737, Whitehaven (20 miles from Muncaster) ^[8].
