Alexander was born in 1979. He was the son of Leslie Billig and Catherine Carr-Archer. He earned a BA in Mathematics at St Hugh's College, University of Oxford in 2001. He earned an MSc in Music, Mind, & Brain at Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2011. He earned a PhD in Biological Sciences at Robinson College, University of Cambridge in 2016.
