James Berton was a United Empire Loyalist.

James was born about 1778. He was the son of Peter Berton and Ann Duncan.
The family came to Nova Scotia Colony, to the are later known as Fredericton, New Brunswick, with the Loyalists in 1783. His father was appointed a Judge of Common Pleas.[1]
James married Lanah Stilwell Jouett. She was a daughter of Xenaphon Jewett, a former sheriff of York County who later led a distinguished career in the military. They had a family of several.
James was a merchant in Fredericton in 1812.[2]
His wife Lanah passed away in 1830.
James passed away on June 16, 1848 in Fredericton.[1] He was interred at the Old Burial Ground in Fredericton.[3]
