Biography

Thomas Berney, Knt., was the son and heir of Henry Berney, Esq., and Alice Appleton.[1][2][3][4] Thomas may have been born at Park Hall, in Reedham, Norfolk, where his father held lands. His date of birth is unknown and is estimated based on his wife's 1570 birth.

Thomas held lands in Reedham, Norfolk.[1] He served as Sheriff of Norfolk[1] in 1609.[5]

Thomas married Julian Gawdy, daughter of Thomas Gawdy, Knt., of Redenhall[4] and Claxton, Norfolk and his second wife, Frances Richers.[1] They had five sons and one daughter:

Thomas died intestate in 1616,[1] it appears his estate may have been administered in 1618.[7]

Thomas Berney is a descendant of Magna Carta Surety Barons Saher de Quincy, John de Lacy, Gilbert de Clare and Richard de Clare in trails that were project approved/badged in May 2015 by the Magna Carta Project to Gateway Ancestors Marmaduke Beckwith and Edmund Jennings. Badged trails from Beckwith/Jennings to sureties William d'Aubigny and Robert de Ros were connected later. This profile also appears in a badged trail from Beckwith and Jennings to surety barons Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod that was developed in Autumn 2022. Trails to the aforementioned surety barons are outlined in the Magna Carta Trails section of both Gateway's profiles: Beckwith and Jennings.
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".
