Frances Berney was the daughter of Thomas Berney, Knt., and Julian Gawdy.[1][2][3][4] She may have been born at Park Hall in Reedham, Norfolk, where her father held lands. Her date of birth is unknown and is estimated based on her marriage date.
Frances married Edward Barkham, Knt.,[3] son and heir of Edward Barkham, Knt., and Jane Crouch,[5] on 31 July 1622 at Tottenham, Middlesex.[1][4][6][7] Under their 1622 marriage settlement, Frances brought to the marriage lands at Skirbeck and Fishtoft, just outside Boston, Lincolnshire.[6] They had the following children and possibly others:
Edward,[5] named in his father's will;[8] Knt., 2nd Baronet,[1] died in 1687, married first to Grace Lord and second to Frances Napier, with whom he had issue[7][4]
William, named in his father's will;[8] Knt., 3rd Baronet.[1] He was baptized 26 February 1638/9, buried 28 December 1695; married Judith Halsey[4] and had issue[7]
John, named in his father's will;[8] baptized 11 December 1643 and buried 29 July 1670[7]
Frances,[1][5] baptized 16 September 1624[4] at Tottenham,[7] died before 1667 (not named in her father's will)
Joan/Jane,[1][5] baptized 8 September 1630,[4] married Anthony Deane;[7] died before 1667 (not named in her father's will)
Margaret,[5] wife of Edmund Jennings, Knt.,[1][4] died before 1667 (not named in her father's will)
Anne, wife of Jonathan Jennings, Knt.,[1][4] died before 1667 (not named in her father's will)
Mary, was named in her father's will.[8] She was the wife of Norton Curtis[1][4][7]
Susannah, wife of Anthony Smithson,[1][4] died before 1667 (not named in her father's will)
Lucy,[1] baptized 20 February 1639/40,[4] married Francis Wall,[7] died before 1667 (not named in her father's will)
Julian,[1] was named in her fathers will.[8] She was perhaps baptized 22 February 1641/2,[4] married Leonard Sowersby[7]
Elizabeth, named in her father's will,[8] was probably born before 1635 (listed in London Visitations)[5]
Frances died on 1 July 1667 and her husband died 2 August 1667.[1] They were both buried at Southacre, Norfolk.[1][7] Edmund left a will proved 6 August 1667,[1] that named sons John, William, and eldest son Edward; and daughters Elizabeth Barkham, Mary Barkham, and Julian.[8]
Research Notes
Other Children
Francis and Edward may have also had a son Thomas who was born before 1635 (listed in London Visitations), probably dying in infancy.[5]Lincolnshire Pedigrees also lists a daughter Joanna baptized 3 November 1644 and buried 13 February 1644/5; and a daughter Penelope who was buried 13 July 1675, aged 8 years.[7]
