Richard was the fifth son of Francis Bernard and Alice Haselwood.[1][2][3] His birth date is not known, but the third son, Francis, was born in 1558, he had seven sisters, and he himself first married in 1600.[2][3] Against that background is has been estimated as about 1570. (Marlyn Lewis gives an estimate of about 1578, citing Douglas Richardson, who actually gives no birth date, and should be relied on.[4] He may have been born at Abington, Northamptonshire where his father had property.[2][3]
Richard married twice. His first wife was Alice Chibnall, daughter of John Chibnall of Astwood, Buckinghamshire and widow of William Adams. They married at Astwood on 24 October 1600. Alice was buried at Turvey, Bedfordshire on 24 April 1606.[2][3]
His second wife was Elizabeth Woolhouse, daughter of Anthony Woolhouse, a London haberdasher (also of Glapwell, Derbyshire), and Millicent Strelley.[5] Richard's will refers to a daughter, Elizabeth Morley, of his wife by a previous marriage, so presumably she was a widow, possibly with her first husband having the surname Morley (though this may have been the married name of Richard's stepdaughter).[6] She was a sister of Mary Woolhouse who married Richard's brother Francis.[2][3] They had three children:
Richard had property at Turvey, Bedfordshire and Great Coddington, Northamptonshire.[2][3]
Richard was buried at Great Doddington, Northamptonshire on 24 April 1613.[2][3][7] His will, dated 20 February 1612/3, was proved on 16 June 1613.[2][3] It describes him as of Turvey, Bedfordshire, which may be where he died. In out, among other provisions, he:[6]

Richard Bernard, married (2nd) Elizabeth Woolhouse, daughter of Anthony Woolhouse, Gent., by Milicent, daughter of John Strelley (died 1559), vintner of London. They had two sons, Richard, Gent., and John, and one daughter, Alice.
