Los Angeles Cal. April 25 1908 J. W. Beebe (signed)

1840

William Henry Beebe was born in 1841 to Alonzo and Mary (Wormley) Beebe in Steuben Co., NY.

1845 STATE OF NEW YORK CENSUS, Howard Township, Steuben Co., NY page 009:

Alonso Beebe 3 males, 2 females, 1 male subject to military service, 1 eligible to vote.

The family would be:

Alonzo Beebe a voter and eligible for military service at age 30;

Elizabeth (Wormley) Beebe (women were not eligible to vote at this time);

William Henry Beebe born Nov 20, 1840 and age 5 is too young to vote or to be eligible for military service;

John Wormley Beebe born Dec 20, 1842 and age 4 is too young to vote or to be eligible for military service;

Sarah M. Beebe born Oct 7, 1844 age 1;.

Note: Since Alonzo fits into Jonathon Beebe's census for earlier years and they are now living next to each other, more than likely Jonathon is the father of Alonzo. Orsemus Beebe born Jan 1, 1839 is not on this census and must have died.

Alonzo and his family moved from Steuben Co., NY to Kendall Co., IL between 1845 and 1846 based on the birth locations of his children in the 1860 census. Henry Beebe is on his own census list on Page 250. Note that a George Wormley is on Image 21 of 40, and may be Elizabeth's brother.

1880

1880 federal Census for Kendrick Twp., Greene Co., Iowa page 16D has:

(William) Henry BEEBE husband age 39, farmer, [born 1841] born in New York and both parents “don’t know”?;

Mary C. (Wright) wife, age 29 [born 1851] born in Indiana and both parents born in Indiana;

Orville W. Son, age 12 [born 1868] born in Iowa and both father born in New York and mother born in Indiana - line crossed out and marked “this one died!”Note: if this was true, then a second Orville was born after 1880 and his children born in 1890 when the second was 10 years old so something is wrong with this entry. Note: the line is probably incorrect as later information indicates that Willie died.

Wetran C. (Willie?) son age 10 [born 1870] born in Iowa and both father born in New York and mother born in Indiana;

Myra daughter age 3 [born 1877] born in Iowa and both father born in New York and mother born in Indiana;

Orson son age 2 [born in 1878] born in Iowa and both father born in New York and mother born in Indiana.

Note where is Hazen(Dick) BEEBE born Nov. 1879? Was he born after the census?

Published Genealogical Information

  1. ) The Family of Beebe, Unconnected Families; page 1, 10: Quote, "William Henry Beebe, son of Alonzo and Elizabeth (xx) Beebe; was born 20 Nov 1840/41 in New York; died in 1917 at Greene County, Iowa; and was buried at Fair Oak Cemetery in Greene County, Iowa. Occupation Farmer. He is called William H. in the 1850 Census, and William in the 1860 census. They had been married 34 years at time of the 1900 census. The 1900 census shows his birth as 1840, but his gravestone shows 1841. A document from Dolpha (Beebe) Mangham (William Henry's Great Granddaughter) to Denise Sanford reads: "Henry Beebe has been a resident of Greene County since 1865. At that time he settled upon 160 acres of land on section 35, Kendrick Township, which was then in its primitive condition. He sold that farm and removed to his present home in Bristol Township in 18---, which is one of the most desireable farms in that part of the country. It comprises 270 acres of land in an excellent state of cultivation. It is fenced into 5 fields. His residence and other farm buildings are noticeably good. Mr. Beebe was born in Stueben County, New York, November 20,1840, son of Alonzo and Elizabeth Beebe. He was the eldest of a family of 6 sons and 3 daughters. When he was quite young his parents removed to Kendall County, Illinois, where he grew to manhood." {Editorial Note: this quote from Dolpha (Beebe) Mangham was lifted from the Green Co. History text. [1] Also note there is additional information available in the text of this source.}
    1. ) Children of Wm. Henry and Mary (Wright) Beebe:
      1. ) Orville Wesley Beebe; born November 1867.
      2. ) William O. Beebe; born circa 1870 at Iowa; died prior to 1900.
      3. ) Myra Beebe; born circa 1877 in Iowa; died prior to 1900.
      4. ) Hazen "Dick" Beebe; born Nov. 1879.

Research Notes

Notes and questions regarding the BEEBE RECORD:

  1. Alonzo was born in New York according to the census records of 1850, 1860 and 1870. He probably died in Chicago and a death certificate may be located there.
  2. The record appears to read that she died in 1845 which does not appear possible, so it is presumed to be 1895. The location of her death is not known but Chicago might be the place.
  3. Orsemus in not listed on the 1845 census for New York and presumeably died before then.
  4. William Henry BEEBE is listed on the 1860 census with Alonzo BEEBE on page 249 while a Henry BEEBE appears on the same census on page 250. One wonders what his relationship is to Alonzo and William Henry. The 1860 Chicago Directory also has Alonzo and Henry S. BEEBE living near each other. I have a death date of Oct. 10, 1918 in Wort____ Twp., Cook Co., IL, while this record lists his death date as 1917? The 1900 census has his father born in in Minnesota and his mother born in Pennsylvania, neither of which are correct for William Henry BEEBE but may be true for Henry S. BEEBE. Is Henry a family name? In the 1910 census, Henry BEEBE was born in New York, with both parents born in Pennsylvania? When and where did Mary (WRIGHT) BEEBE die?
  5. What does the M. in Sarah M. AND Hellen M. BEEBE stand for?
  6. What does the S. in Orsemus S. BEEBE stand for?
  7. Orville Wormley BEEBE seems to confirm that Alonzo’s wife was Elizabeth WORMLEY. Orville served in the Navy during the Civil War. Orville died Feb. 1, 1921 and is buried with his wife Susan (Apr. 3, 1840 – July 14, 1924) in the Elmwood Cemetery, Yorkville, Kendall Co., IL. Nearby are Mabel M. BEEBE, Apr. 29, 1899; Charles BEEBE Oct. 29, 1909; Mrs. A. N. BEEBE, Aug. 10, 1915; A. N. BEEBE, Apr. 18, 1919; and Alvin BEEBE, Nov. 10, 1930. John Wormley BEEBE put together the list of the BEEBE FAMILY in 1908. and died in Los Angeles in 1923.
  8. What does the B. in LeGrande B. BEEEBE stand for? Where and when did he die?
  9. Hellen M. BEEBE died in California. Her death certificate mentions that she is Hellen SHERMAN, wife of Jerome SHERMAN. What does the M. stand for? {Answer: Marie [2]}
  10. Jeanette L. BEEBE died in 1837 in Illinois. The Illinois death records should be checked for Jeanette LARGE, wife of Edwin P. LARGE. What does the L. stand for?
  11. Jerome B. BEEBE died in 1929 in California. The California death records should be checked. What does the B. stand for?
  12. Annabelle BEEBE was born Dec 31, 1860. She was not on the 1870 census and presumably died before then. Check Illinois death records in Cook Co. if death records exist that early.
  13. If John W. BEEBE wrote the list in 1908, who added his and the later death dates?
  14. Summarizing the middle initials and possible names from prior generations: (Henry?)
    1. B. - BENEDICT? BOLTWOOD? BEACH?
    2. M. - ?
    3. S. - STARR?
    4. L. - LADD?
    5. W. - WORMLEY?
