No record has been found of the birth of Amos O. Beckler. He was the son of Philip Beckler and Fanny (Otis) Beckler.[1] The 1850 Census shows him as 27 years old, born in Maine.[2] His gravestone has his birth date as 1823.[3] He was probably born either at Newcastle, Maine, where his parents had been married the previous year or at Pittston, Maine, where his brother Charles M. Beckler was born in 1825. The death record of his eldest child, Mary E. (Beckler) Thing, gives her father's birthplace as Newcastle.[4]
Marriage
Amos O. Beckler married Betsey H. Austin.[1] In 1850, Amos O. Beckler, 27, and Betsey H. Beckler, 26, were living at Livermore, Maine, with two children, ages 2 and 4.[2]
Children
According to the Ira Thompson Monroe's1928 history of Livermore, Maine, Amos and Betsey (Austin) Beckler were the parents of the following children.[1] Monroe has an entry for an Albert O. Beckler, whom it says was a son of Amos and Betsey (Austin) Baker and was born in 1864 and died in 1866. There is no other record of such a child, and it is likely that Monroe (or his unspecified sources) was actually referring to Herbert O. Beckler, whose gravestone shows was born in 1864 and died in 1865.[5] The list of children, as reported by Monroe with the name of Albert corrected to Herbert, is as follows:
The 1928 history of Livermore, Maine, says that Amos O. Beckler "lived on several different farms in town and at one time he resided in Boston, but in 1857 bought the original Josiah Wyer farm one-half mile south from Livermore Center."[1] The date of the purchase of the farm may be incorrect, because in 1865, he was living at Boston with his wife and children and his younger brother Oliver Beckler, with Amos and Oliver both called teamsters, and his three youngest children shown as born in Massachusetts.[6] By 1870, he was back in Livermore.[7]
Death
The gravestone of the Amos O. Beckler family at the Hillman Ferry Cemetery at Livermore, Maine, shows Amos' dates as 1823-1889.[3]
