Biography

Mary was born in 1851. She is the daughter of Liberty Tanner Beardsley and Maria Bathsheba Scott. She passed away in 1923.

(1) MARY CALISTA -7, b. June 7, 1851, in Georgetown, Michigan. Married March 16, 1870, in Georgetown, Mich., to Byron Benjamin Godfrey, M.D. Dr, Byron Benjamin Godfrey was born March 1, 1848, in Hannibal, Oswego Co., N.Y. His father was Almon Thos. Godfrey, born in Berlin, Rensselaer Co., N.Y. Aug. 5, 1806 and died in Hudsonville, Mich., April 7, 1884.
His mother was Lovina Beardsley Godfrey, born in Hannibal, N.Y., Sept. 10, 1812 and died Jan. 10, 1892, in Hudsonville, Mich. Her father's name was James Beardsley, brother of Liberty Beardsley-1, mentioned above, and hence, also a descendant of William Beardsley, of Stratford, Conn. Dr. B. B. Godfrey was at one time Principal of the Grandville, Mich. Public School. He began his professional studies at Detroit Medical College, and afterwards entered Rush Medical College, Chicago, from which he graduated in 1878, and opened an office in at Lamont, Mich., where he practiced until 1880, when he moved to Hudsonville, Mich. He practiced there until 1895, when he moved to Holland, where he again was engaged in the active practice of medicine for many years. He was health officer of that city for several years. In 1890 he was a candidate for Congress from the Fifth District of Michigan, on a Prohibition ticket, and although he was defeated , he received a large number of votes. He is a member in high standing in both the Masonic order and the Odd Fellows.
They had six children, four of whom died during infancy or very early. The following is an account of their two children Pearl Cleo and Almon Tanner:
Pearl Cleo Godfrey-8 was born Feb. 18, 1873, in Tallmadge Township, Lamont, Mich., was graduated from Hope College Preparatory School in Holland, Michigan, June 1890. She became the wife of Rev. Isaac Van Kampen on June 28, 1893, and has resided in Saddle River, New Jersey, since that time, where her husband has been pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church for over 20 years. The parents of Dr. Van Kampen were among the early settlers of Holland, Mich. Dr. Van Kampen graduated from Sweenburg's Business College, Grand Rapids, Mich., Hope College, Holland, Mich., receiving degree of A.B. in 1890; took his theological course in New Brunswick, New Jersey, finishing there in June 1893; later on he took a course in Sociology in the Weslayan University, Bloomington, Ill., and after several years of home study spent one year in residence work at that institution, where he received the degree of Doctor of Philosphy in June 1900.

  1. Godfrey Raynard, b. June 13, 1899. Godfrey Raynard Van Kampen entered th "D" class, Hope College Prepartory School, Holland, Michigan, Sept. 1912.
  2. Gertrude Mary, b. Dec. 5, 1905
  3. Beardsley Clyde, b. Feb. 15, 1907
Almon Tanner Godfrey-8 was born Feb. 8, 1877, at Lamont, Michigan, and at the age of three years, his parents moved to Hudsonville, Michigan, where he spent his boyhood days. In Sept. 1893, he entered the "C" class in the Preparatory School, Hope College, Holland, Mich., from which institution he received his A.B. degree in June 1900. That same year he received a scholarship in Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, and began the study of medicine there in Oct. 1900, receiving the degree M.D. there in June, 1904, after which he began the practice of medicine in Holland, Mich. He was ap[pointed instructor in Chemistry and Physics in Hope College, 1904; assistant professor, 1908; and elected Professor of Chemistry, 1909. At the writing of this article, March, 1914, he is still connected with Hope College as Professor of Chemistry, and Medical Director, besides devoting a portion of his time to the practice of medicine, having an office with his father, Dr. Byron Benjamin Godfrey, at the corner of College Avenue and Tenth Street. Both father and son are members of the Ottawa County Medical Society; michigan State Medical Society; and the American Medical Association. Almon Tanner Godfrey is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
June 15, 1904, he married Harriet Mary Free, a niece of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Totten, Hudsonville, Mich. She was the daughter of Mr. Andrew Free and Hattie Turner Free. She was born in Russell, Pennsylvania, March 29, 1882. Both Almon Tanner and Harriet M. Godfrey are members of the Hope Reformed Church, Holland, Mich, having formerly belonged to tye Congregational Church, Hudsonville, Mich.

Mary (18) married her 2nd cousin Byron Benjamin Godfrey (22) (born on 1 Mar 1848 in Hannibal, New York, United States; son of Almon Thomas Godfrey and Lovina (Beardsley) Godfrey) on 16 Mar 1870 in Georgetown, Michigan. Their children were:

In 1920, Mary Goddfrey (68), was a wife, in the household of Byron Goddfrey (72) in Holland Ward 1, Ottawa, Michigan. [7]

Mary died on 24 Jun 1923 in Holland, Michigan, United States, aged 72.[8]

MARIA BATHSHEBA SCOTT -6 b. Aug 17, 1817, in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co., N.Y. Married, April 5, 1846 in Georgetown, Mich. where they lived on a farm about one mile south and one mile west of Jenison, Mich. She married Liberty Tanner Beardsley (nearly always called Bursley). She died Mar. 18, 1872, in Georgetown, Michigan where she was buried. Their children were:
