Elizabeth Beard was born in Sussex, England.

Biography

Elizabeth was baptised on 15 Dec 1611 in East Grinstead, Sussex, England. She was the daughter of Richard Beard and his wife Ann (named in her baptism record). Two of her siblings, Richard Beard and Ann Beard were also born in East Grinstead. Several younger siblings were born in Rottingdean, Sussex. Elizabeth also had an older brother William whose place of baptism had not been located. Details of several of Elizabeth's siblings can be found in their father's will and WikiTree biography. The will referred to Elizabeth as "daughter Cottingham" enabling her spouse to be identified. He was Thomas Cottingham, a yeoman from Fletching in Sussex. They married on 28 or 31 May 1642 at the church of St John sub Castro, Lewes, Sussex. Elizabeth died in 1659 and was buried in Rottingdean on 18 December of that year. By that time her birth family had become Quakers so this was a very early Quaker burial.

Research Note

The three infants baptised in East Grinstead need independent verification as the offspring of Richard Beard. Only Elizabeth's record gives her mother's name (Ann). Richard certainly did have three children with these names in addition to those born in Rottingdean. No other candidate baptisms for them have been located.Eady-184 18:06, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
