His will, written 13 December [no year], was proved 18 January 1749. This document is badly damaged [torn with sections missing], but the names of his wife and many of his children are present: wife - Mary; children - Anthony, Joel, William, and Elizabeth Bartee, and Sarah Whitehurst and Dinah McCoy. Also mentioned is a son-in-law, Thomas [last name missing] placed in a position in the will where the executor may have been named. Added to these children in a March 1756 Deed is John Bartee, a minor at that time.
March 1756 division of Arderegan Bartee's land between his four sons, Joel, Anthony, William and John. Joel is the eldest, John the youngest. Assumption is the 4 were listed in order from eldest to youngest. Joel was to have the manner [sic] plantation tract, which he sold, the remainder to the other 3 sons was undivided. Land was purchased by Arderegan from Jeremiah Etheridge, Richard Chapman, and Robert Bartee. John to have 200 acres of land lying in Black (Piney?) Swamp which Aderegan purchased of William Portlock.
Although his name appears in various forms, such as Adrigan, Arderagan, Ardregan, the accepted version, Arderegan is from his signature as a witness to the 1743 will of William Odeon.[1] Per the nuncupative will of his mother, the short version of his name, or nick-name, was Ardre. There are other family members with the name Ardre, and this name is sometimes mistakenly reported by researchers as Andre.
