Biography

ELIZABETH TAPP BARRY was born to Robert and Anastasha (Morris) Barry March 11, 1827 in Blount, Alabama. She had six other brothers and sisters including John and Lucinda mentioned below in the reference section.

Elizabeth met and married Benjamin Franklin McClung. The couple had nine children together. In the 1870's the McClung family resided in Wileys Cove, Searcy, Arkansas.

Mrs. Elizabeth (Barry) McClung passed away January 31, 1904 in Sentinel, Washita County, Oklahoma. She was buried at Huckleby's Farm, Carter, Oklahoma, United States

• In a letter from James Robert McClung, Elizabeth's grandson, to his cousin Charles McClung, dated January 17, 1955, he states that she was the daughter of Robert Merser Barry, that her brother was John Barry and her sister was Lucendy Huffman. This confirms her mother's name as Anastatia Morris. The only way her mother could be named Lingo is if she had two names, a white name and a Cherokee name, with Lingo being her Cherokee name. Her brother John M. Barry had a granddaughter name Mollie Lingo Clegg.

• Jimmy Wayne McClung, in his book "The McClung Family of Wise County, Texas", 1981, says that Elizabeth Tapp Barry McClung lingered long with a common abdominal disorder, a dropping womb, in the dugout home just outside of present day Sentinel, Oklahoma before she died on January 31, 1904. Benjamin Franklin McClung, while living in the same dugout, died June 23, 1906. Elizabeth and Benjamin were buried on the Huckaby farm six-tenths of a mile west of Sentinel. The cemetery still stands today on the George Huckaby farm. However, the McClung grave markers have been ravaged by time.

• Jimmy Wayne continues regarding Alma Noble Armstrong, the daughter of Paralee McClung, sharing her memories regarding Elzabeth Barry McClung. "Grandma was so dainty, so sweet, so patient and so good. I just loved her so much." She said Elizabeth was unable to stand on her feet much in her last ten years. That made her life miserable.
