Biography
James was born in December 1925 at Shepherds Bush, Kensington, London, England. [1]
His parents were William G. Barrett and Clara P. Williams, married in Kensington 1Q 1912. [2]
His birth was registered in January 1926, mother's maiden name Williams.. [3]
In the 1939 Census of 51 Birchway, Hayes and Harlington United District his widowed mother has remarried and has three of her children with her. [4]

In his younger years he joined both the Merchant Marine, and the British Navy, visiting New York, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand.
In 1944 aged 19 he was an assistant steward aboard the S.S. Ocean Vigil. He was described as 5 ft 8 in, weighing 147 lb, and having a scar on the right arm. He had been in that role for 2 1/2 years. [5]
He settled in New Zealand about 1950.
In 1950 Glennis June Garvan and James Patrick Barrett were married in Ohakune. They had 5 children:

- Tina Maria (Waiouru)
- Karen Ann (Palmerston North)
His war service record confirms that he was in the Merchant Navy. [6] Medals he received:

He spent a short time on the West Coast of the South Island, mining, some time in Dunedin, before joining the NZ Army. Most of his working life was with the army at Waiouru Military Base. In the 1960s they moved to Palmerston North where he worked at the MidCentral Hospital.

On 13 July 2018 James Patrick Barrett passed away aged 92, having been born on 15 December 1925. [7]
The ashes for James and Glennis are buried in the Kelvin Grove Cemetery. [8]
