Biography

Emily Tabitha Barker was born 28 January 1852 in Benton County, Alabama, which later became Calhoun County.^[1] In 1860, she was living with her father, mother, six siblings, one niece, and one nephew in Benton County on a land valued at $4000.^[2] By 1870, her father had died; 18-year-old "E.T. Barker" and the remaining family at home, including her mother, younger brother, and a formerly enslaved housekeeper, had relocated to Cleburne County, Alabama, where the real estate was valued at $1500.^[3]

On 12 January 1871, Minister of the Gospel E.G. League (?) married Emily and John Alfred Howle in Cleburne County, Alabama.^[4]

On census enumeration date in 1880, Emily (age 28) and John "Hawle" (age 30) were farming in Bells Mill, Cleburne County, Alabama, with five children ages 1-8, of whom three were attending school.^[5] In 1900, Emily, John, and three children ages 6-19, still lived in Bells Mill, Cleburne County, and John was a farmer. Emily reported that she had eight children living out of 11.^[6]

In 1910, Emily and John, along with three children ages 16-29, lived on a farm in Bells Mill, Cleburne County, Alabama.^[7] In 1920, widowed Emily and two grown sons were farming in Bells Mill.^[8] In 1930, Emily. reporting no occupation, was 77 and lived with one of her sons who was farming in Bells Mill.^[9]

Emily died on 07 Apr 1933 and is buried in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Heflin, Cleburne, Alabama.^[1]
