Fred Bankhead was a second baseman in the 1930's and 40's in the American Negro League. He debuted with the Birmingham Black Barons in 1937 and ended his career with the New York Black Yankees in 1948. Four of his brothers - Sam, Joe, Garnett and Dan also played in the Negro League with Dan becoming the first Afro-American pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Fred was the second son born the Garnet and Ara Armstrong Bankhead. Garnet was a coal miner and Ara was a homemaker.
Fred married Emma, according to the 1940 US Census.
Fred died in December, 1972.
