Anna and her husband Thomas made the decision to emigrate from England to New Zealand, under a settlement scheme orchestrated by George Vesey Stewart. They travelled Saloon Class on the ship "Oxford" under Captain Braddick, departing from Gravesend, London on 5 December 1880 and arriving into Auckland in April 1881[6]. They were then transported from Auckland to Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty on the Glenelg. They had their two children and their two children Frederick and Edith with them, along with her widowed mother in law Mary Hingston and sister in law Amy Roberta Hingston[7].

The Hingston family were among the first settlers in Te Puke, about 30 minutes out of Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty. They had been granted 130 acres of Land on 21 September 1880. Their address prior to leaving England was Copenor, Crescent Rd, Reading, Berkshire.

Tragically her husband Thomas was accidentally drowned while bathing in Waihi Creek, near Maketu on 30 March 1891, aged 48.

Anna Mary Hingston passed away on 29 January 1935 and was buried at the Old Te Puke Cemetery, SH 33 and Landscape Road, Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand[8].

Obituary
Mrs Anna Mary Hingston
It is with deep regret that we have to chronicle the passing of still another of the old settlers of the district in the person of Mrs Anna Mary Hingston, of No. 2 Road, who died on Tuesday last at the advanced age of 92 years. The deceased lady was the widow of the late Mr Thomas Hingston, who was drowned at Maketu very many years ago. She was a native of Reading, England, and arrived in New Zealand with her husband in 1881 by the "Oxford." They met with misfortune almost as soon as they landed at Tauranga, the whole of their goods being burnt in a big fire that destroyed several of the business places in the town. Within three months of their arrival they settled on a block of land on No. 2 Road and here Mrs Hingston has resided ever since, occupying the original homestead. For some years past she had been a partial invalid on account of having sustained a broken thigh about nine years ago but otherwise she enjoyed good health until about a week ago. She leaves a son and daughter — Mr F. Hingston and Mrs J. L P. Harris —and seven grandchildren. The interment took place on Thursday, the Rev Hodgson, Rotorua, conducting the burial service.[8]
