Biography

Giuseppe Baglio’, son of Ignazio Baglio’ and Maria Paternostro, is born 17 August 1868 in Corleone and baptized the next day. His godparents are Bernardo Mangano and Giuseppa Sciacchitano, a married couple.[1]

Giuseppe marries Biagia Bonanno, daughter of Pietro Bonanno and Serafina Misuraca, on 19 June 1898 in Corleone. His mother has died.[2]

More sources are needed to fill in the details of Joseph and his family's emigration, and the births of their children. It appears from the 1940 census that they have at least six children: Maria (1901), Ned (c. 1904), Pete (c. 1911), Dominic (c. 1914), Nuncio (c. 1916), and Mike (c. 1920).

Mary, born in 1901 in Franklin, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, marries in 1929 in Houston, Texas, to Bernardo Petranella, whose parents are from Corleone. Bernardo, called Ben, is a salesman with an unusual history of violence and kidnapping that suggests organized criminal activity. His brother, Barney, is a bootlegger and narcotics trafficker.

Ned, their neighbor in 1940, is likely to be their son. His address suggests it is on the same property with Joe's. Based on their birthplaces, the family lived in Louisiana from around 1904 until sometime before 1914, when they were in Texas. They came to California sometime before 1935.

In the 1940 federal census of Los Angeles, CA, AD 62, taken in April, Joe Baglio heads a household at 5743 Bandera St. He owns his home, worth $7500. Joe, 74 (b. 1866), and his wife Bessie, 62 (b. 1878), were born in Italy. Their children at home are Pete, 29 (b. 1911), born in Louisiana; and Dominic, 26 (b. 1914); Nuncio, 24 (b. 1916); and Mike, 20 (b. 1920); all born in Texas. Joe is a machinist helper in a machine shop. Dominic is a laborer at general work. Nuncio is an inspector in a machine shop.

The next family in the census is Ned Baglio, at 5743 1/2 Bandera St. Ned, 36, was born in Louisiana, and his wife Josephine, 23, was born in Texas. Their daughter, Bessie Ann, 1, was born in California. Ned owns his home, worth $1500. In 1935, Josephine lived in Los Gatos, Santa Clara, California. Ned is a machinist in a shop.[3]

Death of Joseph

Joseph dies on 29 May 1963 in Los Angeles. He is 95. The date of birth on his death records matches his baptismal record and confirms he was born in Italy.[4][5]

Bessie Bonanno Baglio was born in Sicily in 1877. She died in Los Angeles County, California in 1966[6]
