Biography

Francois Babin is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, Plaque 1 Left. The family was one of the earliest Acadians to emigrate to Louisiana, which was under Spanish rule at that time. Listed with Francois is his spouse Marguerite Breau, two sons Charles Babin and Paul Babin, and 2 orphans Mathurin Babin and Anne Babin.^[1]

Paul Babin, son of Francois Babin and Marguerite Helene Breau, was born about 1766,^[2] probably in Maryland during his parents' exile from Acadia.^[3] The family left Maryland not long afterwards, and on 2 February 1768 were listed on a census of Acadians established at San Luís de Natchez, Spanish Louisiana.^[4] By 1 August 1770, they were listed on the Ascension Parish census in the left bank settlements of the Mississippi River.^[2]

He married Marguerite Pelagie Dugas, daughter of Michel Dugas and Anne Sophie Forest, on 26 April 1802 at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Donaldsonville, Ascension Parish, Louisiana. Witnesses were Jean Baptiste Lessard and Pablo Dugat.^[5]
