Biography

This profile is part of the Babcock Name Study.

Adam Babcock was born 27 September 1740 in Westerly, Rhode Island.[1]

Adam was party to the celebrated leather-breeches lawsuit that pit his reputation against that of Phineas Stanton Jr. This set of suits is described at length in "A record, genealogical, biographical, statistical, of Thomas Stanton, of Connecticut, and his descendants : 1635-1891" starting on page 45.

Adam married Abigail Smith in New Haven, Connecticut around 1764. Children:

  1. William Smith Babcock, born 15 November 1765, married Elizabeth Merrill
  2. Joshua, born 1770, died 1790 on a voyage to Calcutta with his father. Another record says he died of smallpox in January 1791 at Honfleur, France
  3. A son, born 1773.

In 1773 Abigail and Adam completed the purchase of a large tract of land on Long Island, in Suffolk, New York sold to them by his father Joshua Babcock. They appear to have traded away some property to complete this transaction. [2]

Abigail died on 16 December 1777 at the age of 33[3].

On March 23, 1779, he married Martha Hubbard for his second wife. She was a daughter of Daniel and Mary Green Hubbard of Boston, born June 13, 1758. Their children were:[4]

  1. Eliza Babcock, born 21 February 1780; married Captain Nathaniel Ingersoll
  2. Martha Hubbard, born 7 April 1781; married first George Higginson and second his brother, James Higginson
  3. Mary Green, born July 1782; married first John Gore and second a Mr. Russell
  4. Henry, born 1 April 1784; settled on the island of Bourbon
  5. Francis, born 6 May 1786; married Alice Wyer
  6. Louisa, born 1799 and died unmarried in 1824.

Adam Babcock died in Boston in 1817.
