Biography

Richard Awbrey was born in Brecknockshire, Wales.

Richard, born c. 1350, is the son of Thomas Awbrey and Nest ferch Gethin. He married Crisli ferch Philip ab Elidir Ddu. ^[1]

They had 3 sons:^[2]

• William of Harford (Hereford?) – This is the way Bartrum lists William. Most likely Hereford is the correct location. Many Awbreys lived in Herefordshire. Harford is located many miles distant in in far southwest England.
• John Aubrey (sold Slwch to Rich. Fawr). Fawr translates to great or large. Possibly this could be a reference to his father. Or, it could be Gwalter’s son Richard.
• Gwallter Awbrey who married Gwenllian Morgan

Marriages

A previous edition of this profile listed a 2nd marriage to “Gwladus f. Dafydd Fras. There was not a valid source link to support this marriage. A search for this person reveals she married Philip ab Elidir.

Dates of Birth

More than one date of birth is found in different sources. The latest research was provided by Darrell Wolcott of The Center for the Study of Ancient Wales. A link to his research is in the green box above. Also, see Wolcott’s web page EINON AP LLYWARCH OF CARMARTHENSHIRE – footnote 27 which reads:

"[27] Dwnn ii, 57 & Pen. 131, 232 say Crisli (or Sissely) ferch Philip ap Eildyr Ddu married Richard Aubrey (c. 1350) son of Thomas Aubrey Hen (c. 1315) son of William Aubrey (c. 1275). A brother of that Richard Aubrey, Griffith, married the sister of Crisli, Marged, according to Pen. 133, 39. A third, unnamed, daughter of Philip ap Elidyr Ddu is cited in Pen. 133, 64 as having married Dafydd (c. 1340) ap Hopkin (c. 1305) ap Gruffudd Gethin (c. 1270) of Ynys Dawe, Gower...a man of uncertain ancestry whom we date by other marriages among his family."

Jones, Theophilus, A History of the County of Brecknock, published 1909 lists the Awbrey family pedigree without dates. Also, he has left out several generations.

Evans, Dr. Myron (an Awbrey descendant), O Hudd Ei Ddoe published in 2012 lists different dates and gives little credence to the Awbrey pedigree earlier than Thomas Awbrey “Constable Coch”. Dr. Evans now ascribes to the findings of Wolcott and the research in Jon Awbrey’s book Aubrey/Awbrey Dominion and Decline published in 2007.
