Biography

Pvt Ebenezer Avery served for Connecticut in the War of 1812

This Ebenezer Avery, born 8 Aug 1762 at Groton, Connecticut, was the first child of Phebe Denison & Ebenezer Avery.

He married twice, both at Groton, Connecticut:

1) 25 Sep 1783 Hannah Morgan; the 6 children of this marriage were born between 1783 and September 1792; their last 2 children died young:

  • Clarissa Avery, b. 2 Mar 1791
  • Jonathan Avery, b. 6 Sep 1792
Hannah (Morgan) Avery died 27 Sep 1792, just 3 weeks post-partum of her last child.

2) 17 Feb 1793 Mary Eldridge; they had 6 children:

  1. Charles Eldridge Avery (B. 1794)
  2. Henry William Avery (B. 12 Oct 1795)
  3. Mary Eldridge Avery (B. 1798)
  4. Sidney Avery (B. 1800)
  5. Amasa Avery (B. 1801)
  6. Jared Reid Avery (B. 1804)

Ebenezer and Mary were both first cousins and third cousins. Mary's mother was the sister of Ebenezer's father. They were also third cousins via their shared set of 3rd great grandparents (James Morgan & Mary Vine).

In 1840 he was living in Preston, New London, CT. and is listed as a 78-year-old veteran.

Ebenezer Avery died 8 Aug 1842 at Groton and is buried in the Eldredge Cemetery in Ledyard, CT.
