Lucy was born about May 1807 in Brunswick County, Virginia. She was the daughter of John Atkinson and Elizabeth Lundie.

She married Dudley Britain Peebles (~48) (~1784 - ~1860) on 25 Dec 1832 in Brunswick, Virginia,^[1] and they had the following known children:

1. William Yates Peebles (1833–1853)
2. Marietta B Peebles (1835–1853)
3. Susan Clara Peebles (1838–)

Following the deaths of her family, she married in 1864 Lewis J Deupree.

She died in 1877 in Athens, Georgia.

DEATH AND OBITUARY NOTICES FROM THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE 1867-1878, Issue of September 25, 1877 -- Mrs. Lucy Gates (sic - should be Yates) Deupree was born in Brunswick county, Virginia, in May, 1807; and died at Athens, Georgia, July 3, 1877. She was the eldest daughter of Captain John Atkinson and his wife Elizabeth Lundie. Her scholastic education was complete at Salem, North Carolina, In 1833, she was married to Dudley Peebles, and soon afterward removed with him to Merriwether (sic) county, Georgia. They had three children. William and Marietta were taken, the one from Emory College at Oxford and the other from LaGrange Female College on the day of her graduation, to untimely graves. In 1860 her faithful husband died, and last of all, her dear Susan. In 1864 she was married to Lewis J. Deupree of Oglethorpe county, Georgia. In 1870 he died.
