Biography

This profile is part of the Atkinson Name Study.

Burkett was born in Georgia to Archibald Atkinson and Martha F. Dean. In 1850, the family was living in Henry County, Georgia.[1]

His father wrote a detailed Atkinson Family History in 1879 in which he and his wife and children are mentioned. According to the history, Burkett married Betsy Willet of Clark County, Georgia in Nov 1856. They had nine children: Joseph, Mattie, Lula, James, Sallie, Willie, Charles, Johnny and Carrie.[2] However, they actually had ten children - there was another daughter, Dora E, born a month after the history was written.

However, in Nov 1856, there is a marriage record of Burkett to a Ruth Willougby in Clark County.[3] This may have been the person Archibald refers to as Betsy Willet. Archibald may have been confused regarding the last name, and Ruth may have had the nickname of Betsy. The marriage date and her being from Clark County all match. Also, Ruth shows up in all the census records and the grave sites as Burkett's wife. No records have been found, other than the Atkinson Family History by Archibald Atkinson, to connect a Betsy to Burkett.

In 1870, the family was living in Spalding County, Georgia. Children listed with them included Ellis, Martha (aka Mattie), Mary L (aka Lula?), James, Sallie and William.[4] An Ellis was not mentioned in the Atkinson Family History, but in looking at other records he appears to be the Joseph E that was mentioned in the history.

In 1880, the family was in Coweta County, Georgia.[5]

In 1900, Burkett was living with his youngest child, Dora, out in California.[6]

Burkett passed away in 1904 in Louisiana. Burial was in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Vernon, Jackson Parish, Louisiana.[7] His wife, Ruth, is buried there also.

Both Burkett and Ruth are mentioned in the death record of their daughter, Lula, in 1936.[8]
