Thomas was born in Bickerstaffe, Lancashire on 3 July 1639, son of Oliver and Ann Atherton.[1][2][3] He came to Ireland in June 1664 to visit his brother-in-law Richard Hunter, and set himself up in shoemaking in Lehmchee, King's County. He came to Dublin around 1667 and married Ellen Holmes on 18 July 1669.[4] He died on 12 June 1690 and was buried in Dublin.[5]
